| Social Concerns Committee
- What does it do?
The Social Concerns Committee engages in a range
of activities throughout the year. Many individuals
and other parish organizations within the parish provide
support for those in need as well.
- Local Needs - the
Committee responds to the needs of individuals and
families in our parish and communities in whatever
way is desired by them and for which human or other
resources are available. Please contact the parish
office if you or someone you know needs assistance.
Examples of responses include:
- meals in time of crisis such as resulting
from serious illness
- support following fire or flood damage.
- Special
Monthly Collections
- Bulletin
articles - "Reflecting on Today's
Scripture" and "Living Today's Scripture"
which link social concerns to the weekend scriptural
readings maybe
- Advocacy - the call
to justice necessitates at times advocacy for fairness
in the political and/or economic aspects of society.
The Social Concerns Committee has initiated annual
participation with the Offering of Letters for eradication
of hunger and poverty as initiated by Bread
for the World . Other advocacy issues have included
fair economic policies for dairy farmers in Pennsylvania
as advocated by the National
Catholic Rural Life Conference and the banning
of landmines.
- Lenten Simple Meal
- a parish community meal which includes a speaker
who conveys information about some area of social
justice. Recent topics have included the Shepherd
of the Streets program (a faithful response to those
in need in our county) and human
trafficking - exploitation of women and children
for sexual and/or work purposes
- Diocesan Grants -
the Social Concerns Committee has successfully written
grants each year for monies collected as part of
the Diocesan Annual Appeal. The first grants supported
the initial creation of the parish's library with
social justice and scriptural resources. In recent
years, the Diocesan Grant has contributed $1,000
each year to the Son Light House. This ecumenical,
community based resource supports those in greatest
financial need with food and clothing in the area.
- Coordination with other Social
Concerns efforts - The parish's Social
Concerns Committee works in conjunction with the
Social Concerns Committee of the United Churches
of Lycoming County and the Social Concerns Office
of the Diocese of Scranton
